Ostrava’s Parish Garden Transforming into Community Hub with City’s Support

Second Stage of Reconstruction Complete, Bringing New Life to Parish Garden

Ostrava’s Parish Garden of St. Mark in Heřmanice has successfully completed its second stage of reconstruction, thanks to the city’s subsidy program ‘Create Space’. The garden expansion has created a peaceful rest zone, a charming gazebo, and a pétanque playground. Gabriela Pokorná, spokesperson for the municipality, confirmed these developments.

"The ‘Create Space’ program gives people the chance to shape their surroundings. The Parish Garden is a testament to what can be achieved through a great idea, city support, and community cohesion." – Lucie Baranková Vilámová, Deputy Mayor.

The Ostrava Bishopric and individual donors also contributed financially to the transformation.

New Amenities Encourage Intergenerational Coexistence and Community Engagement

In 2019, the garden opened to the public with the city’s financial backing. Since then, it has become a thriving community hotspot, hosting events like summer cinema, traditional egg-frying feasts, and Christmas tree lighting ceremonies.

The recent expansion includes a rest zone known as the ‘Corner of Virtues’, aimed at providing relaxation for visitors of all ages, along with a covered outdoor table for table football.

"All new elements are designed to foster neighborhood meetings and intergenerational bonding." – Pokorná

Parishioners oversee the garden’s operation and maintenance, with help from local volunteers.
