SM Caen Reserve Takes Top Spot in National 3 with Victory Over Oissel

SM Caen Reserve Team Regains First Place in National 3 Ranking

Reserve Team’s Success Amidst Professional Team’s Struggles

While the professional team faced another setback against Quevilly on Saturday, November 11, 2023 (3-3), coach Nicolas Seube was in Oissel with the reserve team. The team, strengthened by the presence of four young professionals – Noé Lebreton, Diabé Bolumbu, Mohamed Hafid, and Daylam Meddah – secured a 1-0 victory. This triumph proved to be a significant boost for their ranking as Villers-Houlgate did not play against Dieppe, allowing Caennais to regain the top position.

Robin Verhaeghe’s Decisive Contribution

However, the victory was hard-fought. In a match that marked Naël Anouari’s return to competition after a five-match suspension, Stade Malherbe had to wait until the final 15 minutes to break the deadlock. Robin Verhaeghe, with a well-executed cross volley from a free kick, found the back of the net from 5.50 meters (0-1, 75′).

“Until that point, we had a good control of the game,” said Nicolas Seube. “We played coherently for 75 minutes. However, Oissel posed a great threat, with a ball cleared off our goal line and a disallowed goal due to offside in the last five minutes. We became vulnerable when we shouldn’t have. Our opponent had more chances in the final quarter of an hour than throughout the entire match.”

A Positive Response

Caen managed to hold on and, for the second consecutive time, showed resilience after a home defeat (0-1 against Villers-Houlgate). However, with six professionals on the field, including Mario Fortunato and Daouda Koné, there is room for improvement in terms of goal margin.

As the Caennais prepare for their second derby against AG Caen on Saturday, November 25, 2023, the question arises: Will Nicolas Seube continue as their coach? The former player’s name frequently emerges as a potential successor to Jean-Marc Furlan. However, uncertainty looms over the situation for now.
