Sisters in Sync: Li Zhenghong and Li Zhengyan’s Badminton Debut at SEA Games

Thai badminton courts are set to witness the powerful synergy of Li Zhenghong and Li Zhengyan, the Singapore Badminton National Youth Team sisters making their debut at the Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games). The 18-year-old and 17-year-old, respectively, will compete in women’s doubles and contribute to the women’s team event, carrying the weight of years of coordinated play and the support of their family.

From their first taps of the shuttlecock at ages six or seven, Li Zhenghong and Li Zhengyan have shown natural harmony. They explored singles and doubles before settling on women’s doubles, reveling in the mutual reliance this format provides. Their journey hasn’t been easy, balancing academics and intense training regimens.

A Master of Balance

desgracefully, Li Zhenghong is juggling A-level exams and SEA Games preparation, a feat she finds challenging yet rewarding. Speaking to Lianhe Zaobao, she said, “We’re one of the few in our team studying in junior college, unlike our teammates who attend sports schools. Managing schoolwork and training is tough, but our love for badminton fuels our drive.”

Looking Ahead

Li Zhengyan, one year younger, shares her sister’s determination. Despite not facing A-levels this year, she too has clear goals, hoping to pursue a professional badminton career post-high school.

ihre bond has weathered storms of disagreement, but they remain each other’s rock. “We’ve argued, but those differences make us who we are,” Li Zhenghong laughs, recalling minor incidents like the notorious sock mix-ups.

Their bond was tested last year when Li Zhenghong suffered a knee ligament injury, requiring surgery. Li Zhengyan stepped up, concern etched on her face, “I feared she’d lose her drive to play. But she’s strong-willed and bounced back optimistically.”

A SEA of Challenges Ahead

The 2023 SEA Games promises intense competition, with powerhouses like Malaysia and Thailand fielding full-strength teams. Malaysia’s Chen Kangle/Tina, fresh from their World Championship silver medal, will be a formidable opponent.

Modest yet ambitious, the sisters aim to learn from top regional players and seize every opportunity. They admire the cohesion and camaraderie displayed by teams they’ve watched, including Chen Kangle/Tina. Yet, they remain focused on their personal growth, aiming to provide a lasting memory for Singaporean fans.
