Champion Hurdler Sir Gino Dies After Battle with Infection

The racing world is mourning the loss of Sir Gino, a rising star in the hurdling world, who has been put down after failing to recover from a serious infection. Trainer Nicky Henderson confirmed the heartbreaking news on Tuesday, March 24, 2026.

A Promising Career Cut Short

Sir Gino, who was favored to win the Champion Hurdle, had been battling illness since sustaining a fractured pelvis while racing at Cheltenham in January. Despite overcoming a similar infection last year, this time the illness proved insurmountable.

“We have very sadly lost the battle to overcome Sir Gino’s ailment and he has had to be put to sleep at the veterinary hospital this morning.”

Henderson further explained that while Sir Gino’s fractured pelvis was healing well, the severe deep-seated infections had spread too far. He described the horse as not only brilliant but one of the nicest kindest horses you could ever wish to see, adding that his loss leaves an awful hole in Seven Barrows.

Sir Gino boasted an impressive unbeaten record, winning all seven of his completed starts, including three Grade 1 hurdles and a Grade 2 Chase. Henderson believes Sir Gino was at least as solid as any of all the amazing horses we have been lucky enough to have trained.
