Irish Duo Struggles at BMW PGA Championship
Lowry and McIlroy Well Back After Frustrating Rounds
Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy, starting the day in strong positions, struggled in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth on Friday. Despite playing together for the second day running, the Irish duo finished well off the pace set by leaders Viktor Hovland, Hideki Matsuyama, and Ludvig Aberg.
Lowry, growing increasingly frustrated throughout the round, had an outburst at the 15th hole, leading to apologies from Sky Sports commentators. His day ended with a two-over-par 74, leaving him tied with McIlroy on -3, nine shots behind leader Matsuyama.
Lowry’s Frustration Boils Over on Hot Mic
“I mean, you are fucking joking!” caught the ire of the Offaly man after his approach shot trickled off the green and back into rough terrain. This exchange led the Sky Sports commentators to humorously respond, “Sorry to hear that. We weren’t joking!”
It is not the first time this year that Lowry has been caught swearing on a hot mic. He finished the day with a level-par 72, leaving both him and McIlroy effectively out of contention despite progressing to the weekend.
