Investment Data Crucial for MotoGP’s Future in Malaysia

PETALING JAYA, MALAYSIA — The future of the Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix (MotoGP) depends solely on solid investment data, according to Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh.

“We are not just signing in terms of tourism. It should help support the economy and job opportunities for Malaysians.”

While the event generates around 4,500 temporary jobs annually, Yeoh stressed the need for long-term benefits, such as skills transfer to Malaysians. She highlighted the importance of data collection to convince the finance ministry that hosting the MotoGP is not a waste of resources.

The Malaysian MotoGP’s fate hangs in the balance, with SIC’s contract set to expire in 2026 and extension talks underway with rights holder Dorna Sports.

Malaysian Badminton Hopes for World Championships

In an unrelated matter, Yeoh expressed confidence in Malaysia’s badminton squad ahead of the World Championships in Paris from Aug 25 to 31. She expressed optimism about the potential of athletes under the Road to Gold (RTG) program but cautioned against injuries due to the tight competition calendar.

SEA Deaf Games

Separately, 80 athletes will represent Malaysia at the SEA Deaf Games in Jakarta, competing in futsal, athletics, badminton, tenpin bowling, chess, and table tennis.
