The event, held on April 12th, drew approximately 100 attendees, including the Mayor, National Assembly members, City Council representatives, residents from the Daejang-dong neighborhood, and local community leaders, despite the rainy weather. Mayor Shin Sang-jin emphasized the importance of reconnecting with nature, stating, “I hope to feel the energy of nature through the dirt road and take care of the health of the body and mind.” He personally walked the new path alongside residents, demonstrating the experience.

“Earthing,” a practice involving walking barefoot on natural earth, is increasingly recognized for its potential therapeutic effects. Research suggests it can reduce inflammation, boost immunity, and alleviate stress by grounding the body’s electrical system. “This activity is more than just a walk; it is a powerful reconnection with the earth,” explained a local resident participating in the event.

Seongnam’s commitment to natural wellness initiatives isn’t new. The city previously established 11 ‘Hwangseong-gil’ (earth paths) across various neighborhoods, including Sujin, Wirye, and Hope Deck, with a recent reopening completing the network in the spring. This latest expansion demonstrates a citizen-led approach to urban planning, prioritizing community engagement and incorporating feedback to create truly beneficial spaces. The city is extending this focus with new forest trails and ecological routes, aiming to create a holistic approach to public wellness, encompassing mental health promotion, community building, and local economic revitalization.

“It’s a precious connection—between people and nature, people and people, and between the now and the future,” the Mayor noted. The success of this project is anticipated to inspire similar initiatives across the region, reinforcing Seongnam’s position as a leader in sustainable and people-centric urban development.
