The Spanish driver, interviewed by Marca, spoke about his memories and ambitions: “Winning for Williams would perhaps be the most important thing in my career”
Four years have passed since the first in red and today, three victories and five pole positions later, the final credits are approaching between Sainz and Ferrari. But it is not yet time to take stock. Of course, Carlos will be in Williams next year, “a project that I am increasingly motivated by”, explains the Spaniard to Marca, but there are still six races left to run with the Red and more than one goal to achieve. “My mind is already projected towards Williams – admits the Madrid native – but I want to think in the short term and between winning a GP next year or a race today with Ferrari I will choose to win with the Red”. In short, the love for the Cavallino, as well as impeccable professionalism, will be there until the end.
PAST AND PRESENT
—
“They were four precious years,” explains Sainz, who leaves Ferrari with many good memories and, above all, the awareness of having reached that driving maturity that was still missing in previous experiences between Toro Rosso, Renault and McLaren. “My first victories and first pole positions came here in Maranello and I want to end the year in the best possible way, perhaps winning one last race before saying goodbye to Ferrari.” The opportunities are there, “Mexico and Las Vegas are the GPs where we will have the greatest chances”, as are the objectives, “we have never been the fastest but the Red is always there, we must take advantage of the mistakes of others and win”.
FUTURE
—
His Ferrari next year will belong to Hamilton, “I won’t interfere, I’ll keep my opinion to myself” the Spaniard cuts short, and thinking about the future for Carlos is inevitable. James Vowles did everything to have him with him at Williams, where Sainz will have an unprecedented role as team leader alongside Albon. “Nothing would make me more excited than winning a race next year – explains the Madrid native – it would mean that I made a good decision, that I managed to transform the project into something that really works”. And, in fact, climbing back up from the bottom of the standings won’t be easy. “Winning for Williams would be something important, perhaps the most important thing in my career.” And Ferrari? “I will remain a Red rider for my whole life and who knows… maybe our paths will cross again”.
