Sabres’ Dahlin Reflects on Turbulent Year, Teammates’ Support
– Buffalo Sabres defenseman Rasmus Dahlin appeared emotionally raw but relieved after Tuesday’s game, a 5-4 overtime win against the Philadelphia Flyers. The victory marked more than just two points for the Sabres; it was a symbol of Dahlin’s resilience after a tumultuous year off the ice.
Loss and Recovery
Last summer, Dahlin and his fiancée, Carolina Matovc, suffered a heart-wrenching loss. Yesterday, Matovc shared on Instagram that their unborn child would have been due on Monday. Unfortunately, the baby didn’t survive a traumatic health scare that Matovc endured, which also put her life at risk. She underwent a heart transplant after beingplaced on life support for weeks.
“Today was meant to be the day we finally met you… You are our hero, and I hope you are being well cared for in heaven. We love you, baby Matovc Dahlin.”
Dahlin’s Struggle and Support
“You know, it’s been… I don’t know if I can fully describe it now. I need some time. It’s been a crazy year,” Dahlin said, struggling to find the right words after Tuesday’s game. “I’m just so happy I can be with this team.”
Dahlin paused before expressing gratitude towards his teammates, “My brothers, they help me every day. I could not have done this without them, that’s for sure.”
Teammates Praise Dahlin’s Resilience
Sabres forward Tage Thompson commended Dahlin’s strength, “The fact that he’s here playing hockey and competing for us, means the world to us… The mental strength you have to have to do what he is doing is incredible.”
Sabres Appreciate Dahlin’s Journey
Dahlin and Matovc’s painful odyssey has not been lost on the Sabres. Moments like Dahlin’s smile on the ice Tuesday serve as reminders of how far they’ve come in their quest to regain normality.
