Historic Return to Spanish Soil
After an absence of 34 years, the prestigious Ryder Cup is set to return to Spain in 2031. Girona, in the Catalonia region, has been chosen to host the biennial men’s golf competition, which brings together the top players from Europe and the United States. Selection Process & Economic Impact
The Ryder Cup selection process changed in 2019 to avoid expensive bidding wars and focus on candidates that meet certain economic and infrastructure requirements. Since then, the European circuit has been directly designating hosts. Prior to Girona’s selection, Madrid and Cataluña were also in contention, with Paris 2018 and Rome 2023 being the previous European hosts. The next European Ryder Cup will take place in Ireland in 2027, followed by Girona’s 2031 event.
The Spanish government has authorized public investment for the 2031 Ryder Cup, promising to support the promotion of golf in Spain leading up to and following the event. The last Ryder Cup, held in Rome in 2023, generated an economic impact of about 1 billion euros in the Italian capital and its surroundings. Spain, already a popular golf destination, attracts around 1.2 million tourists annually who visit for golfing purposes.

Girona will take over from the iconic 1997 Ryder Cup held in Valderrama, which was the first time the tournament left the British Isles to be staged on Continental Europe. The leadership and influence of legendary Spanish golfer Severiano Ballesteros played a crucial role in bringing the Ryder Cup to Spanish soil for the first time. In recent years, Europe has dominated the competition, winning 10 out of the last 14 editions.
