World No. 2 Forced to Withdraw Before Third Round
Rory McIlroy has withdrawn from the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, citing a back injury. The withdrawal occurred shortly before his scheduled third-round tee time on Saturday.
McIlroy was experiencing muscle spasms that prevented him from continuing in the tournament.
“While warming up in the gym this morning, I felt a small twinge in my back. As I started hitting balls on the range before the round, it worsened and developed into muscle spasms in my lower back,”
McIlroy said in a statement to the PGA Tour.
He added, Unfortunately, I’m not able to continue and have to withdraw. I was excited to compete this weekend. I wish the Arnold Palmer Invitational a great finish and look forward to being back next year.
Second Career Withdrawal
This marks only the third time in McIlroy’s professional career that he has withdrawn from a tournament. His previous withdrawals occurred at the 2009 Nedbank Golf Challenge (due to flu and food poisoning) and the 2013 Honda Classic.
At the 2013 Honda Classic, he initially cited a toothache but later apologized, stating his head wasn’t in the right place.
Impact on Upcoming Schedule
Despite the withdrawal, the back spasms are not currently expected to impact McIlroy’s participation in next week’s Players Championship, where he is the defending champion.
This represents the first significant back issue McIlroy has faced since experiencing discomfort at the 2023 Tour Championship. He successfully played through the pain at that event and later led Europe to victory at the Ryder Cup.
McIlroy is preparing for a busy stretch of tournaments, culminating in the defense of his Masters title in April.
