Rory McIlroy Off to Strong Start at Truist Championship; Lowry Three Back
McIlroy Starts Solid in Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA – Four-time major champion Rory McIlroy got his title defense underway Thursday at the Truist Championship, leaving himself within striking distance despite a less-than-stellar start.
McIlroy, seeking his 20th PGA Tour victory, opened with a 1-over 71 atfty the par-70 Philadelphia Cricket Club. He struggled early and had to rally with birdies on Nos. 16 and 17 to finish the round.
McIlroy is five shots off the pace after the opening round.
McIlroy’s 71 left him well back of the leader, Keith Mitchell, who shot a 66.
Lowry Three Shots Back
European Open champion Shane Lowry shot a 3-under 67 to trail the leader by three strokes.
Lowry, a two-time winner this season, notched six birdies against three bogeys in a round that included bookending birdies at the first and 18th holes.
“It was nice to get off to a good start, and it was nice to finish the way I did,” Lowry said.
