On May 4, 1904, 23-year-old Londoner Charles Stewart Rolls and 37-year-old “countryman” Frederick Henry Royce met in the Midland Hotel in Manchester: it was the beginning of one of the most fascinating stories in the automotive world. That of Rolls-Royce, which, among the celebrations for the 120th anniversary of the debut of the first model – created by Rolls alone while we had to wait until 1907 for the first Silver Ghost – thought of an extraordinary special series on the Phantom, which will also celebrate its centenary in 2025. At the last Monterey Car Week, the Phantom Scintilla Private Collection was presented, a limited series of 10 models, already privately assigned to a series of selected customers, ready to spend without problems, starting from the assumption that the basic version starts at half a million euros and never before has the Bespoke department dedicated itself to customization, creating models of incredible luxury. Justified by thinking that for the occasion, the Spirit of Ecstasy figurine has been finished with a ceramic treatment that recalls the Parian marble from Greece with which the original was built Nike of Samothrace over 2,200 years ago.

HAND PAINTED WHEELS

The light theme returns in the body finish, which combines Andalusian White and Thracian Blue with double Spirit Blue pinstriping to recall the colors of the island of Samothrace. A very thin metallic flake, instead, recalls the sparkle of the sun’s rays on the water. Then there are the hand-painted Spirit Blue wheel stripes that, together with the double line of the body, draw the profile of this car. But it is obviously in the passenger compartment that the designers have gone wild, starting with new Bespoke embroidery and a series of design elements and graphics that are inspired by the Spirit of Ecstasy. Birenny Dudley, the craftsman who took care of this solution, chose the motif tatamitypical of Japan, applying it in six layers intertwined in varying degrees of complexity and intensity. Just to give you an idea of the deadly work done for the internal composition, it took over 40 hours of work for something like 869,500 points.

Bespoke Starlight Animated

Five different colours (Blue Grey, Arctic White, Spirit Blue, Powder Blue and Pastel Yellow) on 36 different panels for the finishes and embroidery on the seats and door panels, ideally recreating the motif of the movement of the statuette’s clothes. Spirit of Ecstasy moved by the wind. An equally original solution was chosen for the wood: the chosen color is Arctic White with metallic iridescent elements in the lacquer, which requires 19 layers and 190 hours of work. On the dashboard, the inevitable gallery – iconic for Rolls-Royce models – has been decorated with the Celestial Pulse theme, created with seven elements machined in aluminum and finished with the same ceramic finish as the statuette on the hood. Finally, the internal pavilion is embellished by the Bespoke Starlight animated that recreates the starry sky motif with 1,500 optical fibers and 4,450 holes in the fabric to make the covering stand out Metallic Silver below. You may or may not like Rolls-Royces, but there is no arguing that the ten owners will own not a car but a unique object.
