Injuries to the rib, shoulder blade, hand, bruised lungs and a dislocation of the right collarbone for the top man of Soudal Quick-Step, who has already undergone surgery in Belgium

December 4 – 11.48am – MILANO

There is a long climb on the horizon for Remco Evenepoel, who will now have to show off all his climbing skills. Involved in an accident yesterday (he was unable to avoid the door of a van during training in Brabant), the Belgian cyclist was immediately taken to the Erasmus hospital in Anderlecht, where in the evening he underwent a surgical operation to recompose the various reported fractures. Evenepoel himself wanted to reassure everyone through a post published on his Instagram profile, in which he explains that “the operation went well” but that “now it will be a long journey towards recovery” considering “the fracture of the rib, the scapula, to the hand, bruises to the lungs and a dislocation of the right collarbone which caused the rupture of all the surrounding ligaments”.

“I WILL COME BACK STRONGER THAN BEFORE”

After thanking all the medical staff and his family for the support received over the last 24 days, Evenepoel also wanted to dedicate a thought to the woman involved in the accident (an employee of Bpost, the Belgian postal service), to whom he addressed his his “support”. Then the promise, addressed to all his fans: “I am determined to come back even stronger, but it will take time. Step by Step”.
