The 29th Edition of Aspanoa Match Breaks Attendance Record
November 12, 2023
The Romareda stadium was filled with solidarity this morning as the 29th edition of the Aspanoa match took place. The event surpassed its own attendance record, attracting over 24,000 spectators, predominantly children.
A Day of Solidarity and Excitement
Under clear skies and with an excellent atmosphere, the Real Zaragoza Veterans Group triumphed with a 4-1 victory against the Legends of Atlético de Madrid. Cani, Paredes, and Piti (twice) scored for the Blanquilos, while Ignacio Camacho from Zaragoza was the top scorer for the Colchonero club.
However, the result was secondary to the main purpose of the match: raising funds for the fight against childhood cancer. This event contributes to 15% of Aspanoa’s annual budget, an association dedicated to supporting children with cancer and their families in Aragon. Thanks to this funding, the first-ever research against childhood cancer in the region has been initiated.
A Festive Atmosphere for a Worthy Cause
The match was filled with excitement and entertainment. Prior to kick-off, Zarpa, the mascot of the Real Zaragoza Supporters’ Club Federation, delighted the young fans by parading around the field. A group of superheroes and princesses also joined in, having previously cheered outside La Romareda as fans entered the stadium.
During halftime, several groups of pipers from the province of Zaragoza, accompanied by two giants and around twenty big heads from the Coordinadora de Comparsas de Zaragoza, captivated the audience with their music and lively dances. To conclude the match, the players threw numerous balls into the stands.
A Successful Event with Distinguished Guests
Aspanoa’s president, Gabriel Tirado, expressed his satisfaction with the overwhelming support: “We have never witnessed such a full stadium at La Romareda. This match allows us to raise awareness about childhood cancer and, most importantly, demonstrates the city’s affection towards the children and families affected by this disease.”
Notable attendees included the mayor of Zaragoza, Natalia Chueca; the Minister of Health of the Government of Aragon, José Luis Bancalero; the general director of Sports, Cristina García; the Councilor for Sports, Félix Brocate; and the socialist spokesperson in the Zaragoza City Council, Lola Ranera, among other authorities.
Representatives from the 12 companies supporting Aspanoa through this initiative were also present, including Articles of Menaje para Colectividades (AMC), CEFA, Caravan Fragrances, Coviar, Ebroacero, El Corte Inglés, Laboral Kutxa, Lacasa, Martín Martín, Solquimia, Zaragoza Deporte, and the Zoilo Ríos Group.
