Quindío badminton left its mark in the First National and Paranational Youth Sports Games Eje Cafetero 2024, winning one silver and three bronze medals. The silver medal came this Thursday, November 28, thanks to Nicolás Morales, who starred in an exciting match in the men’s individual final against Jerónimo Giraldo, from Antioquia. Although he fell 21-16 in the first set, Morales showed his resilience by winning the second 21-12. However, in the third and final set, the Antioquian tipped the balance in his favor with a score of 21-16, leaving the final result 2-1.

The team led by Professor Hugo Morales also secured three bronze medals. In men’s doubles, Sergio Zapata and Nicolás Morales reached third place after being beaten in the semifinals by the Antioquian couple made up of Gerónimo Giraldo and David Ríos with a resounding 2-0. In mixed doubles, the pairs Gabriela González Hernández-Nicolás Morales Rey and Mónica Yulieth Gutiérrez Guapacha-Sergio Zapata Ramírez completed the podium by falling in the semifinals against the Antioquia teams David Ríos-Hanna Escallón and Jerónimo Giraldo-Melissa Vélez, respectively.

The outstanding Quindian group, made up of Sergio Zapata Ramírez, Samuel Alejandro Gámez Vargas, Nicolás Morales Rey, Juan Miguel Morales Mayorga, Mónica Yulieth Gutiérrez Guapacha, María José Rodríguez Rojas and Euclismar Gabriela González Hernández, made a special request: to convert the Multisport Coliseum into the home of badminton in Quindío, as part of the legacy of these Games. The squad revalidates its commitment to the growth of the sport in the region.

The achievement of these medals is the result of the joint effort of the delegation, promoted by Juan Miguel Galvis, leader of the Government Por y Para el Deporte, and the Indeportes Quindío team, under the management of Camilo Ortiz. This management has been key in the construction of a new history for sports activity in the department, consolidating Quindío as a reference at the national level.
