Expanding the Fan Experience: Dedicated Away Sections Coming to Leicester
Premiership Rugby is set to give its trial of dedicated away ends
its most significant test yet, with a section of Mattioli Woods Welford Road in Leicester designated for Northampton Saints supporters during the East Midlands derby on May 9th.
High Stakes Matchup
The fixture between Leicester Tigers and Northampton Saints is a highly anticipated event on both teams’ schedules. Currently, Saints lead the table, while Leicester sits in third place, suggesting the match could have significant implications for play-off qualification and seeding.
Expanding the Trial
This isn’t the first time the concept has been tested. The away end
idea was initially trialled last season at Saracens v Gloucester and Leicester v Harlequins. Leicester’s subsequent away match against Sale will also feature the concept, offering Tigers fans a dedicated area to sit together.
Atmosphere and Fan Engagement
The aim of the trial is to improve the atmosphere within stadiums and enhance the overall matchday experience. According to Rob Calder, the Prem’s chief growth officer, Last season’s trial gave us valuable insight into how away supporter zones can elevate the matchday experience and improve the on-screen product for broadcast audiences.
He further stated, We want to create bigger atmospheres, fuel the passion of rivalries and give fans an even more memorable experience when they approach to Gallagher Prem matches.
It’s important to note that this isn’t a full segregation of fans, as visiting supporters will still have the option to purchase seats amongst home fans throughout the stadium.
