McLaren’s Piastri Storms to Victory, Claims Championship Lead in Thrilling Jeddah Showdown
Piastri Claims Championship Lead as McLaren Dominates Jeddah
In a twist of fate, Oscar Piastri finds himself at the summit of the Formula 1 driver standings after a spectacular win in the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, the fifth round of the 2025 season. The young Australian, driving for McLaren, fared better than title rival Max Verstappen (Red Bull), who finished second after a controversial start left him with a five-second penalty.
Piastri: “Five victories in 2025, it’s a great start!”
I think it’s the toughest race I’ve had in my career.Clawing back that seconds was a real struggle, but I could control the race eventually.
Oscar Piastri
Piastri, who now leads the championship by two points ahead of Verstappen, took victory after a gripping battle that saw him edge out Verstappen on the run to Turn 1. Speaking to David Coulthard in the post-race interview, Piastri reflected on his resilient drive:
“It was a tough race from start to finish. Max was very quick, and it was tricky following in his slipstream. Once I had clean air, the car felt great. It was still a struggle at the end of the Medium stint, but we managed to hold on for the win. I’m very happy with all the work we’ve done. We still need a bit more performance, but it was a great weekend.”
Verstappen: “The rest is what it is. I’m looking forward to Miami.”
Max Verstappen’s second place finish was overshadowed by the stewards’ decision to penalize him for the first-corner incident. Speaking to David Coulthard, Verstappen kept his comments brief:
“I want to thank the fans here in Jeddah. The rest, I’ll leave as it is. I’m looking forward to Miami. See you there.”
Verstappen’s pace throughout the weekend was promising, with Red Bull seemingly closing the gap to McLaren. But the Dutchman was non-committal when asked about the pace difference between the two teams:
“I was positively surprised with my pace. But we still need to work on our performance on circuits with higher degradation. It’s impossible to say how close we were to McLaren today.”
Leclerc Secures Strong Third Place for Ferrari
Charles Leclerc drove an impressive race to secure third place for Ferrari, despite a difficult qualifying session. The Monegasque driver maximized his car’s potential and appreciated his team’s support:
“Today was all about extracting the most out of the car. Unfortunately, we couldn’t do that in qualifying, but we did everything right in the race. We need to keep working hard and hopefully, upgrades will come soon to improve our car.”
Piastri: “Leading the championship doesn’t change anything”
Speaking in the press conference, Piastri insisted that leading the championship didn’t change his approach to racing:
“I’m not bothered by the fact I’m leading the championship. I’m more proud of the work we’ve done to get here. I still want to go out and try to win every race, like I did today.”
