Phoenix Suns Owner Vows Changes After Disappointing Season
The Suns’ regime change comes after a season full of stars but devoid of joy and playoff appearance.
The Phoenix Suns’ forgettable season has come to an end, but the memories of a franchise that had a star-studded roster yet failed to make the postseason will linger. The team ended the campaign with a 36-46 record, leading to a regime change that begins with the dismissal of coach Mike Budenholzer.
“It was a failure,” Suns owner Mat Ishbia said during a press conference, describing the 2023-24 season bluntly. “Nobody was proud or happy with what happened on the court.”
No Identity, No Joy, No Playoffs
The Suns had a tricky balancing act with three superstars – Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal – but they seemed far more like a collection of talented players than a cohesive unit. The result? A team that was often trounced by the league’s best and finished well outside of the playoff picture.
Ishbia said he wants a roster that represents the determination and work ethic of Phoenix itself, with an identity that fans can rally behind.
Changes Ahead
Ishbia and the Suns have already made one significant change by firing Budenholzer. General manager James Jones and executive director Josh Bartelstein are expected to remain with the team, though their roles have yet to be determined.
“We have to hit the next hiring, and we will,” Ishbia said, referring to the coaching vacancy. As for the roster, Ishbia confirmed that Booker, “the franchise player,” is not on the trading block. However, Durant and Beal’s futures remain uncertain.
Did you know?
The 2023-24 season was the first in franchise history that the Suns finished with a losing record after making the playoffs in four consecutive seasons prior.
Looking Ahead
Ishbia, a 45-year-old former Spartans basketball player, is determined to avoid another disappointing campaign. With a coaching search underway and roster decisions looming, the Suns’ owner is focused on one goal: winning.
“We have to bring a championship to Phoenix,” Ishbia said. “And we will.”
