Pavon and Perez Aim for Zurich Classic Glory – Challenging McIlroy and Lowry in Unique Double Format

The Zurich Classic of New Orleans, a unique double-team tournament on the PGA Tour, is set to tee off from April 24th to 27th at TPC Louisiana. This year marks the debut of a 100% French pairing – Matthieu Pavon and Victor Perez – challenging established competition.

Victor Perez is returning to the Zurich Classic for the third consecutive year. In 2023, alongside Thomas Detry, he secured 13th place, falling just short of the cut. However, this year, he’s partnering with a fellow Frenchman, Matthieu Pavon, who secured victory at the Farmers Insurance Open earlier this year.

“It’s great to team up with Matthieu,” Perez said, highlighting the familiarity and shared experience between the two players. “We’ve played together before – within the St Laurent Golf Team – and we’ve represented France together in the Olympic Golf Test.”

Pavon and McIlroy/Lowry share a history, having competed together within the St Laurent Golf Team. Their competitive spirit was further on display last year during the national golf tournament, where they represented France.

McIlroy and Lowry: A Formidable Duo

Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry, the defending champions, are returning to the Zurich Classic intent on retaining their title. Their combined experience and drive for FedEx Cup points make them a significant obstacle for any team.

The Zurich Classic distinguishes itself with its innovative double format. Teams compete in a four-ball (best-ball) format on Thursday and Saturday, followed by a foursome (alternating blows) on Friday and Sunday.

A victory for Pavon and Perez would award them 400 FedEx Cup points and a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour – a prize that would significantly elevate their careers.

Understanding the Double Format

  • Thursday/Saturday: Four-ball (best ball) – Each team’s score is the lower of the two players.
  • Friday/Sunday: Foursome (alternating blows) – Teams alternate hitting each shot.

The stage is set for a compelling contest between established stars and rising French talent. The focus will undoubtedly be on whether Pavon and Perez can overcome the strength of McIlroy and Lowry in this unique tournament format.
