The Rio team won on penalties 5-4, recovering from an agonizing 1-1 draw achieved by Sao Paulo in regulation time.
The other semi-final of the continent’s top club tournament will be played by Argentine River Plate, who left Chilean Colo Colo behind, and Atlético Mineiro, winner of the other Brazilian match against the current champion, Fluminense.
