Scholes Clarifies Carrick Criticism After Social Media Post

Michael Carrick’s side lost to Newcastle

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes moved to clarify a recent social media post that appeared critical of current manager Michael Carrick, insisting he had no intention of causing offense.

Context of the Criticism

Scholes posted on Instagram following United’s 2-1 defeat at Newcastle that Michael has definitely got something special about him, (given that) United have been crap last four games. The loss marked Carrick’s first since taking over from Ruben Amorim.

Scholes Reaches Out to Carrick

Responding to the backlash, Scholes explained on the GoodBadFootball podcast that he contacted Carrick directly.

“Michael is one of the nicest people you will ever meet in football – he’d be the last person I would want to offend. I messaged Michael anyway. I went straight to Michael and said, ‘Look, I never intended to upset you.’ And I don’t suppose I needed to say that anyway, and he told me himself he wasn’t upset by it.”

Scholes further clarified his intent, stating, I think people have just took it differently from what was meant. The only thing I was saying was that I don’t think they played that well the last four games, and he’s still managing to get results.

Evra Criticizes Pundit Negativity

The situation also drew comment from another former Manchester United player, Patrice Evra, who criticized what he perceived as negativity from fellow pundits Roy Keane and Gary Neville.

“It annoys me because we want to be in the top four, and those comments are unnecessary, but This represents what you do when you work in TV. You can’t be positive, you have to be negative.”

United’s Current Standing

Despite the recent loss, Manchester United currently sits third in the Premier League and remains in contention for Champions League qualification.
