The Kern Pharma Team rider took victory on this day, an achievement that takes on special significance as it occurred one day after the death of Manolo Azcona, founder of his team.

Stage 12 of the 2024 Vuelta a España will be remembered as one of the most emotional of the competition. This stage, which covered a mountainous route of 137 kilometres, witnessed Castrillo’s first victory in his professional career.

The victory was unexpected, considering that the young rider had been in the breakaway on three previous occasions without being able to finish. However, his perseverance paid off this time, when, with ten kilometers to go to the finish line, decided to launch a decisive attack on a flat stretch.

Despite the presence of more experienced competitors in the breakaway, Castrillo’s determination allowed him to cross the finish line solo, thus securing a very significant victory for both himself and his team.
