(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Cheon Byeong-hyuk = Japanese superstar Shohei Otani (30, Los Angeles Dodgers), who is playing in the Major League Baseball (MLB), filed a lawsuit again against his former interpreter.

The Associated Press reported on the 29th (Korean time) that Otani filed a lawsuit against Ippei Mizuhara to return the baseball cards he purchased with his own money.

Mizuhara is said to have secretly taken money from Otani’s bank account and purchased baseball cards worth $325,000 (about 450 million won) online.

Mizuhara has worked as a dedicated interpreter since 2018, when Otani entered the major league.

However, during the Major League Baseball Seoul Series held at Gocheok Sky Dome last March, Mizuhara was fired due to suspicions of illegal gambling and theft.

As a result of the U.S. prosecutor’s investigation, Mizuhara was indicted after it was revealed that he had taken about $17 million (about 23.26 billion won) from Otani’s account and engaged in illegal sports betting.

Mizuhara, who had to return $17 million in gambling money to Ohtani and pay $1,149,400 (approximately 1.58 billion won) in taxes, interest, and fines to the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, will now also return the baseball cards.
