Stars’ Nuñez Promoted to Majors, Sánchez Injures Finger, Mateo Out 8-12 Weeks

Nuñez Called Up to Majors

Right-handed pitcher Edurniel Núñez is set to join the San Diego Padres from Triple-A, according to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune. Núñez will be promoted before the Padres’ double-header against the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday.

Núñez has been impressive at Triple-A, throwing 7.1 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit, and striking out 11 batters in seven appearances since climbing from Double-A on June 10. To make room for Núñez on the roster, Matt Waldron is expected to be optioned to El Paso.

Sánchez’s Finger injury

Baltimore Orioles catcher Gary Sánchez will undergo X-rays on his finger after being hit by a foul tip, reports Andy Kostka from The Baltimore Banner. Sánchez exited Tuesday’s game early in the eighth inning and was replaced by a pinch hitter in the ninth.

Interim manager Tony exercise deemed Sánchez’s injury minor, suggesting that the X-rays are likely precautionary. If Sánchez cannot play on Wednesday, Jacob Stallings will presumably replace him behind the plate.

Mateo Out Indefinitely

DJ Mateo has been diagnosed with a left hamstring strain and is expected to be sidelined for 8 to 12 weeks, reports Roch Kubatko from MASN Sports. Mateo was initially placed on the injured list in early June due to elbow inflammation. His rehab assignment with Triple-A Norfolk was cut short after suffering the hamstring injury in a game on Sunday.

With Mateo out, Luis Vázquez will likely continue to see action in the majors.

De La Cruz Added to Injured List

New York Yankees outfielder Bryan De La Cruz has been added to the team’s injured list, according to Chris Kirschner of The Athletic. Initially, it was reported that Trent Grisham (quad) would be placed on the injured list, but those plans have changed for now.

De La Cruz will be added to the roster as insurance in case a transaction becomes necessary for Grisham. The 27-year-old has hit .250/.329/.421 with seven home runs in 43 Triple-A games with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Class Sent Down to Triple-A

The Toronto Blue Jays optioned Jonah class to Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday. Class had seen steady playing time in Toronto since his promotion from Triple-A on May 7 but struggled at the plate with a .219/.299/.313 batting line, two home runs, and three stolen bases in 34 games.

In related moves, the Blue Jays recalled Leo Jiménez to provide infield depth while Bo Bichette continues to nurse a knee injury. Myles Straw, Davis Schneider, and Will Wagner could now see more opportunities in Toronto with Class’s demotion.
