Beyond 400 Weeks at the Top: Djokovic Reigns Supreme
Novak Djokovic, the Serbian tennis player, has reached a remarkable milestone by spending 400 weeks as the world number one. In addition to this achievement, Djokovic has finished at the top of the rankings for the eighth time in his career.
Following his victory in the seventh Masters tournament, Novak Djokovic has extended his lead in the ATP rankings. The latest rankings, released on Monday, show no changes in the Top 20. At the age of 36, Djokovic has now finished the year as the world number one for the eighth time in his career. This puts him ahead of American Pete Sampras and Swiss Roger Federer, who have achieved this feat six and five times respectively. Federer held the top spot for 310 weeks, while Sampras held it for 286 weeks.
“I’m always hungry for records and titles,” Djokovic said. With a lead of 2,390 points over his 16-year-old junior, Carlos Alcaraz, Djokovic shows no signs of slowing down. Despite his age, Djokovic has had a dominant year, winning three Grand Slam tournaments in 2023. The return of Spanish player Rafael Nadal, currently ranked 662nd at the age of 37, in 2024 may provide Djokovic with a worthy rival for the next season. On the French side, Ugo Humbert finished the year ranked 20th in the world, two places ahead of his compatriot Adrian Mannarino. Benjamin Bonzi, Gaël Monfils, and Richard Gasquet all moved up three places in the rankings, while Quentin Halys dropped three places.
