Nikola Jokic’s Struggles in the Spotlight as Nuggets FaceOff Against Thunder
Denver Nuggets fans braced themselves for another Pascual “Peko” beater, but instead, they got a harsh reality check with Nikola Jokic’s struggles continuing into Game 4 against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Denver, who were leading 2-1 in the series, couldn’t capitalize on their strong start, with the series now tied 2-2, setting up a nail-biting Game 5 in Oklahoma City.
Jokic’s Form Plummets Since Game 1 Triumph
The Serbian superstar had ignited hopes with a staggering 42-point performance in Game 1. However, since then, the “Joker” has been far from his comedic self. In the last three games surpassing the 20-point mark against the Thunder, Jokic has managed just 45 points, with an abysmal 33.3% shooting percentage and a dismal 18.2% from three-point range.
“I think OKC’s defense on him has been excellent. They’re coming back physically on him,” Jokic said post-game, acknowledging his opponents’ efforts while also taking responsibility, “I must be better of course, but it’s part of the game.”
Thunder’s defense has been relentless, making life difficult for the Nuggets’ main man. Yet, Jokic’s shooting woes are also a significant concern. According to ESPN, this is the first time in his career that he has shot below 40% with at least 15 attempts over three consecutive games, in both the regular season and playoffs.
Passing Woes Compound Jokic’s Struggles
When the shots aren’t dropping, Jokic usually compensates with his stellar passing. However, the triple MVP’s impact has been significantly dulled in this regard as well. Over the last three games, he has managed just 15 assists, while turning the ball over 16 times.
Once again, ESPN recorded this as an unprecedented feat in Jokic’s playoffs career.
Experts weigh in: Can Jokic bounce back?
“The Nuggets need their Joker to start acting like one. They can’t afford another Game 4 repeat if they want to advance in these playoffs.” – Adrian Wojnarowski
With the series now knotted at 2-2, the Nuggets will need their main man to regain his form if they hope to silence the Thunder and advance to the next round. Aaron Gordon and Jamal Murray will provide support, but the pressure lies squarely on Jokic’s broad shoulders.
