Netherlands and Serbia Eye Critical VNL 2025 Matches to Avoid Relegation
Netherlands Seek Bounce Back After Tough Start
The Netherlands sit at the foot of the VNL standings after two weeks, fighting to avoid relegation. However, there’s reason for optimism in the Dutch camp, with several young stars stepping up.
- Michiel Ahyi, the young opposite filling the big shoes of Nimir Abdel-Aziz, has tallied an impressive 124 points so far.
- Outside hitter Tom Koops is leading the VNL in passes (81) and ranks sixth in digs (59).
- Middle blocker Luuc van Der Ent has been solid, ranking sixth in blocks (18).
“The two-week break was good for us. We’ve got to practice hard, build some confidence, and I hope we get into these matches with more confidence. We need to play as a team and hopefully get the results that we need.”
Setter Wessel Keemink believes the team needs to regain confidence and play as a unit to turn their fortunes around.
Serbia Desperate for Points to Stay in VNL
Like their Dutch counterparts, Serbia find themselves in a must-win situation to avoid relegation. The Serbian squad is banking on experience and new faces to secure crucial points.
- Opposite Drazen Luburić is Serbia’s leading scorer with 102 points.
- Middle blocker Aleksandar Nedeljković ranks fourth in the VNL in blocks (22).
- Coach Gheorghe Crețu is set to bring in setter Nikola Jovović and outside hitter Pavle Perić to boost their chances.
“Our team struggled in the past two weeks, but there’s always light at the end of the tunnel. I hope that Pavle and I can help the team get some wins. Our situation is now very serious, so we need to manage to be better in the last four matches.”
Jovović acknowledges the gravity of their situation and the need for a turnaround in their final four matches.
