The NBA Cup, a novel concept aiming to boost the North American basketball league, has been a resounding success in its third edition, drawing massive crowds and viewership.

“We are really delighted with the results,” said Evan Wasch, NBA executive vice president and head of basketball strategy and growth.

The best historical attendance averages in November were recorded in the last three years since the creation of the Cup: 18,207 spectators in 2023, 18,086 this year, and 18,012 in 2024. The games averaged 2.2 billion views across the league’s own social and digital platforms, a 41% increase over last year.
“The atmosphere is different, it feels different,” said New York guard Jalen Brunson. “It’s hard to explain, but you know there’s something else at stake. When there’s a chance to win something, you have to go out and win it.”
Format and Growth Opportunities
The idea of a soccer-style cup tournament had been kicking around for years in the NBA. The Covid-19 pandemic bubble experience reignited interest in exploring unconventional concepts to drive growth.
The Cup’s success has provided a “long-term growth opportunity” and a new “pillar to enhance media packages,” Wasch said. The challenge was finding a format that generated excitement without adding too many games to the regular season schedule. The solution was integrating most of the Cup matches into the regular schedule.

The NBA continues to evaluate adjustments to improve the Cup, such as the number of group stage games or the tiebreaker criteria. An already announced change calls for next year’s semifinals to be played at the highest-ranked team’s home court, rather than in Las Vegas, where the final will remain the only Cup game not part of the regular season.
Playoff Atmosphere
Parity in meetings is another appealing aspect. In this year’s group stage, 20% of matches were decided by three points or less, compared to 15.7% of non-tournament games.
“When we go into these games, we’re extremely motivated,” said Miami Heat player Jaime Jaquez. “It feels like a playoff atmosphere.”
Looking Ahead
The inclusion of European clubs is a possibility in the future, once the project for an NBA Europe league is launched.
