Naomi Osaka has emerged as one of the most influential figures in the world of sports in recent years. With her Grand Slam titles, top-ranking position, and advocacy for mental health, her return to the tennis courts has been eagerly anticipated. However, a surprising controversy involving her former coach and a rising tennis player has recently resurfaced, adding fuel to the rumors.
Just days ago, Chinese player Zheng Qinwen (currently ranked No. 23 in the WTA) won the gold medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games and secured her spot in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. However, her moment of triumph was overshadowed by an unexpected statement made by the athlete. In an interview with Chinese journalist Zhang Bendou, Zheng Qinwen expressed her disappointment, saying, “Wim Fissette terminated our contract, which I find to be immoral.” She further revealed that Fissette’s decision was driven by a new partnership with Naomi Osaka.
Quoting Zheng Qinwen, “During the US Open, I discovered that Fissette had been in contact with Osaka’s team. I was devastated upon hearing their decision. I understand that Osaka can offer better opportunities and has a family to support, but that doesn’t justify his actions. I won’t easily forgive him.”
Osaka and Fissette had been a successful team from 2019 to 2022. Together, they achieved two out of Osaka’s four Grand Slam titles: the US Open in 2020 and the Australian Open in 2021.
Last year, Fissette announced the end of their partnership via Instagram, stating, “It has been an honor to coach Naomi since 2019 and witness her transformation into the champion she is today. She has inspired a new generation to embrace the sport and voice their beliefs. It has been an incredible journey to be a part of. Thank you, and I wish you all the best in your future endeavors.”
As we eagerly await Naomi Osaka’s return to the women’s tour, it remains to be seen how this controversial coach change will impact her career. Will she find continued success with a new coach, or will the transition prove challenging? Only time will tell.
