In announcing his retirement last month, Nadal said the Davis Cup would be the last tournament of his career. Nadal’s dream was to make a memorable farewell by making Spain the Davis Cup champion, but it was not to be. Spain last won the David Cup in 2019.
He was defeated after 20 years
Nadal played one match against Betik van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands in the quarterfinals but lost 4–6, 4–6. Nadal lost for only the second time in his Davis Cup career. He lost his first to Giri Novak of the Czech Republic in 2004.
The Doubles match has confounded expectations
However, in the second singles, Carlos Alcaraz kept Spain’s hopes alive by defeating Talon Griskapor 7-6, 6-3. Now all eyes were on the two matches. In the third and final match, the pair of Alcaraz and Marcel Granollers lost against Van de Zandschulp and Wesley Koolhom 6-7, 6-7 and with this the campaign of Spain and Nadal also came to an end.
