Statewide Participation in World Meditation Day
More than 50,000 Madhya Pradesh police personnel engaged in yoga and meditation exercises on World Meditation Day, with sessions held at approximately 2,800 locations across the state. The initiative underscores a growing commitment to the mental and emotional health of officers.
Addressing the Stresses of Police Function
Director General of Police Kailash Makwana emphasized the demanding nature of police duty, stating that this day serves as an inspiration for mental peace, positivity, and a balanced life.
The program aims to provide officers with tools to manage stress and maintain wellbeing in a high-pressure environment.
Following a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Heartfulness Institute in February 2025, yoga and meditation have been integrated into the regular routines of police units throughout Madhya Pradesh.
Positive Outcomes Already Evident
According to DGP Makwana, the initiative is already yielding positive results. Reported improvements include increased energy levels, enhanced behavior, stronger family relationships, and a reduction in stress. He also noted that many policemen have also made serious efforts towards giving up negative habits, especially drug addiction.
Heartfulness Meditation: A Unique Approach
Kamlesh Patel (Daji), a guide from the Heartfulness Institute, explained that their meditation method differs from others by focusing on elevating consciousness through pranic energy
. He highlighted the importance of addressing accumulated mental imbalances and stress through a “cleaning” process
that promotes a lighter and more balanced mind.
Programs Extend to the Community
The meditation sessions, organized by the police, were open to the public, including students, morning walkers, government staff, and local citizens. A team of 76 trained Heartfulness instructors within the police force conducted sessions across 55 districts. The department reported zero external funding for the program.
Brighter Minds Initiative
The Brighter Minds initiative, aimed at strengthening children’s brain development, concentration, and self-confidence, was also mentioned. Approximately 3,000 children have participated in this program, receiving training in techniques designed to improve memory, attention, and learning speed.
Looking Ahead
DGP Makwana urged all police officers and staff to adopt regular meditation and yoga practices and suggested an objective evaluation of the initiative’s impact. The Madhya Pradesh Police Department is demonstrating a proactive approach to officer wellbeing, recognizing the critical link between mental health and effective policing.
