The Italian two-wheeler market grows significantly compared to the previous year, but December records +200% due to the end of Euro5 approval
The two-wheel sector toasts to a 2024 that ends with a bang. Thanks to the overall data, which sees sales in Italy of motorcycles and scooters settle at 373,313 units, equal to +10.5%: this is the best result since 2010. Motorcycles grew by 14.48% for a total of 166,454 units ; scooters recorded an increase of 7.54% equal to 186,639 vehicles registered; finally, mopeds manage to straighten out a market that was still losing 4 percentage points in November, closing at +7.45% and 20,220 units.
December boom
—
The values of the December market alone, which recorded a growth of 200.68%, placing 29,587 vehicles on the road, are conditioned by the closure of the Euro 5 homologation, which pushed the end-of-series registrations (in fact, it has been in force since 1 January Euro 5+ for newly registered motorbikes). In fact, all segments report values that largely exceed the trend of previous months. Motorcycles show an increase of 283.13% on December 2023 with 16,762 vehicles registered, while the growth for scooters is 113.54%, equal to 9,823 registered vehicles. Finally, mopeds recorded a performance of +247.05% and put 3,002 vehicles on the road.
electric and quadricycles
—
Despite the December peak (+21.78%), however, the electric segment closed negative, recording a decline of 16.08% equal to 10,170 vehicles sold. However, the result of the quadricycles is good: in December there was an increase of 82.40% and 1,897 units, but the health of the minicars is also attested by the cumulative result of sales, which grew by 28.10% during 2024 putting 20,422 vehicles on the road (13,285 electric, 65% of the market). The most popular segment is that of light quadricycles for transporting people, which grows by 34.44% equal to 17,929 units.
the point
—
“It is a dynamic, resilient, reactive market, where great passion, new users and new mobility needs coexist. Reading these data confirms the central role of motorcycles, scooters and mopeds in Italy and how demand has been able to grow in the face of geopolitical dynamics. If we were to award a 2024 Oscar in the field of private mobility, the award would certainly still go to motorized two-wheelers, but not without forgetting the international challenges and future unknowns that suggest we pay attention to the 2025”. This is what Mariano Roman, president of Confindustria Ancma (National Cycle and Motorcycle Accessories Association), declared, commenting on the 2024 registration data.
