From Wallsend to Old Trafford and Back

Michael Carrick is set to return to St. James’ Park on Wednesday, leading Manchester United against Newcastle United. While widely recognized for his illustrious career with West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur, and especially Manchester United, Carrick’s story begins in Newcastle.

Despite not possessing a strong Geordie accent, Carrick hails from Howdon, in the east of Newcastle, and his early footballing experiences were shaped by the renowned Wallsend Boys Club – known affectionately as the ‘Boyza’.

Early Roots and the ‘Boyza’

Carrick’s formative years were spent honing his skills at the Wallsend Boys Club, a breeding ground for talent that has produced numerous professional footballers, including Alan Shearer, Peter Beardsley, and Steve Bruce. He recalls a memorable experience from the Wallsend Parade in 1992, when, at age 11, he and twelve other boys sang their hearts out on a lorry displaying a banner: “Wallsend Boys’ Club, suppliers to the football industry.”

The club’s significance to both industry and football in the Wallsend area remains strong.

A Career Forged in London and Manchester

Carrick’s professional journey took him from West Ham United to Tottenham Hotspur before his defining period with Manchester United, where he spent twelve years and even captained the team in his final season. He famously wrote in his autobiography, Between the Lines: “I didn’t just play for Manchester United. I lived for them.” Still, his footballing foundation remains firmly rooted in Newcastle.

Carrick’s Foundation Supports Wallsend Boys Club

Funding from Carrick’s foundation has been instrumental in supporting the Wallsend Boys Club, enabling them to employ a general manager, John Percival, after the original club building was damaged by high winds in 2012.

A Manager Returns Home

Carrick’s return to St. James’ Park marks a poignant moment, acknowledging the importance of his upbringing and the community that shaped his career. He understands that his success is a direct result of his origins.
