Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic – The Metropolitan Area, comprised of the National District and Santo Domingo province, emerged victorious at the V Women’s Sports Games 2026, concluding this Sunday with a solemn closing ceremony at the sports center of Ciudad Juan Bosch.

Dominant Performance by the Metropolitan Area

The Metropolitan Area athletes accumulated a total of 52 medals: 22 gold, 14 silver, and 16 bronze. Their success spanned seven sports disciplines, including basketball (5×5), indoor volleyball, softball, basketball (3×3), duathlon, karate, and Olympic wrestling.

Regional Standings

The Eastern Region secured second place with 54 medals (14 gold, 20 silver, and 20 bronze), excelling in skating and weightlifting. The Northern Region followed in third with 26 medals (13 gold, six silver, and seven bronze), achieving wins in beach volleyball, taekwondo, and athletics. The Southern Region finished fourth, totaling 55 medals.

Games Dedicated to Melba Segura de Grullón

The 2026 Women’s Sports Games were dedicated to Mrs. Melba Segura de Grullón and ran from Thursday, March 19, to Sunday, March 22. The competition featured 13 sports: basketball (5×5 and 3×3), volleyball (indoor and beach), karate, judo, weightlifting, duathlon, athletics, skating, softball, Olympic wrestling, and taekwondo.

The event saw participation from 680 athletes and included four invited countries: Saint Martin, Costa Rica, Cuba, and Puerto Rico. Cuba achieved first place in judo, while Costa Rica and Saint Martin secured second places in 5×5 and 3×3 basketball, respectively.

Closing Ceremony Highlights

The closing ceremony, held at the Juan Bosch City sports center, was led by Minister Kelvin Cruz, Senator María Mercedes Ortiz, Mayor Dio Astacio, and Councilor Felito Rodríguez. Minister Cruz also emphasized a commitment to annual Women’s Games, stating our athletes are the cornerstone of this management that I lead in the Ministry of Sports.

Also in attendance were Garibaldi Bautista, president of the Dominican Olympic Committee (COD); Juana José, representing the Ministry of Women; and several Vice Ministers of Sports and prominent former athletes including Milagros Cabral (volleyball), Félix Díaz and Luisito Pie (taekwondo), and María Dimitrova (karate).
