Judo Instructor Finds Path Through Playful Spirit
The key to a fulfilling life, according to Mauro Contigiani, a judo teacher from Urbisaglia, is remarkably simple: happy thoughts
. Contigiani’s journey reflects a dedication to passion and a commitment to maintaining a youthful spirit, even in a role focused on discipline, and instruction.
Early Years and a Spirit of Adventure
Born in Urbisaglia on May 28, 1960, Contigiani describes his childhood as a slightly undisciplined child, not exactly calm
. He recalls a youth filled with outdoor play and a less-than-enthusiastic approach to formal schooling. We played with little, but we were always together. In the morning school was almost a hobby, the rest of the time I spent with friends playing football, cycling and the woods,
he shared.
Those were years defined by simple pleasures and a touch of mischief. He recounted stories of youthful escapades, like stealing cherries and getting soaked in a greenhouse, highlighting a carefree attitude towards rules and a strong bond with friends.
Navigating School and Discovering Passions
School, however, proved to be a challenge. After middle school, Contigiani attended two years of a professional institute, first in San Severino and then in Macerata, but ultimately left before completing the third year, stating, I didn’t feel like it anymore.
An incident involving a sauce-throwing father served as a turning point, forcing him to return to school until its completion.
Amidst these academic struggles, two passions began to emerge: football and judo. He began judo in 1972, encouraged by a friend, balancing it with his football pursuits for several years. Eventually, the demand to support his family led him to prioritize football, temporarily stepping away from judo after military service.
Returning to Judo and Finding a Calling
Judo re-entered his life in 1993 when his former teacher invited him back. He began teaching, first in Macerata and then in Civitanova, before opening his own gym in Urbisaglia in 1996. He also worked as a postman for a period, but ultimately dedicated himself fully to teaching.
Contigiani found fulfillment in the role of instructor, appreciating the opportunity to observe and guide his students’ progress. Since I chose not to be an athlete anymore, I can see the improvements. The teacher cannot do everything together with the students, otherwise he does not see the errors. Before, I also did it with them, even if I didn’t compete,
he explained.
Success and a Philosophy of Play
His students have achieved notable success, including participation at the European level and Italian championship wins. However, Contigiani emphasizes that the results are not the sole measure of his work’s value. I like being with young people. I have always had a nature accustomed to playing,
he stated.
He finds joy in hands-on activities, like olive pruning, learned from local experts, and believes in the power of practical experience. Contigiani’s story is one of transforming youthful energy and a playful spirit into a rewarding career and a fulfilling life.
