Deportivo closed some of its recent wounds with a home win against Cartagena (1-5), the worst home team in the category, with the debut of Óscar Gilsanz on the bench after the dismissal of Imanol Idiakez. The blue and white team punished the deficits at the bottom of the Second Division in a track game with goals from Yeremay and Ximo Navarro in the first half. Barbero increased the lead after passing through the locker room and, after a timid reaction from Cartagena, Dépor sealed the duel through Cristian Herrera and Yeremay.
Óscar Gilsanz, who in this stunning victory postulated his name as the definitive replacement of Idiakez, chose a continuous line regarding the time of the San Sebastian coach. Yeremay, who was a substitute against Racing de Santander, returned to the starting lineup and the Betanceiro coach kept Escudero at left back. An eleven that could have been presented by Idiakez, who also chose the Villares-Mario Soriano double pivot because of the losses in the midfield.
After a first warning for a corner taken by Lucas that was almost missed by Barcia, Dépor took the lead in the 6th minute. Mella, one of the pearls of the quarry promoted by Gilsanz during his time as coach of Juvenil A and Fabril, is the one who returned his confidence by inventing the 0-1 game.. The winger broke Jairo’s waist, reached the baseline and gave the goal to Yeremay with a subtle back pass. ’10’ appreciates the gift and sends the ball into the net with a low cross shot. This is Yeremay’s fifth goal at the start of the championship.
For its part, Cartagena showed during the first action the reasons why it is under the Second Division. He suffered a lot from the balls behind his defense, he could not stop the strength of Mella and Yeremay on the wings and he only achieved Helton’s goal with the separate actions of Cedric Teguia or the laterals crosses. Sipcic, who headed high from a corner in the 10th minute, and Gastón Valles, who connected with a weak header in the hands of Helton in the 13th minute, were the first to shy away attack the home team.
Meanwhile, Dépor continues to threaten the local cause with a constant trickle of arrivals. In the 19th minute, Escudero placed a measured cross for Barbero. The ‘9’ made a nice control, but his cross shot hit the foot of Pablo Cuñat. Shortly after, the Almería striker had another clear chance to make it 0-2, after an individual action by Yeremay, but he finished with his knee and the ball easily reached the local goalkeeper.
Aim, finally, in a corner favor
0-2 seemed close and came in the 25th minute in the most unexpected way for Dépor this season. The A Coruña team has yet to score from a corner despite being the Second Division team with the most corner kicks. But he broke the jinx with a board game. Lucas traced a pass to Escudero, the winger returned the ball to the near post area and Ximo Navarro, completely unmarked, connected with an unappealing header to extend the lead.
Despite the advantage, Dépor allowed the game to enter a round trip with little balance of forces. Cedric, with a header wide and a shot saved by Helton after some personal play, continued to be Cartagena’s most dangerous player. The winger also closed the first half with a long shot that the Brazilian goalkeeper had to stop twice. Earlier, Gastón Valles came close to closing the gap with a header against the crossbar, while Mella had the option to make it 0-3 after Jairo’s pass, but his left-footed shot was too focused .
Jandro, Cartagena coach, tried to shake up the game after going through the locker room with a triple substitution. Ortuño, Ríos Reina and Hugo González, inside. Luis Muñoz, Kiko Olivas and the unfortunate Jairo, came out. In this regard, Óscar Gilsanz rested the injured Ximo Navarro and Escudero to introduce Jaime Sánchez and Obrador.
Jug of cold water for the bottom
Dépor thwarted the home team’s attempt to react by scoring 0-3 in the first half. Barbero, from more to less after wasting two clear chances in the first half, regained his smile when he got a rebound from Pablo Cuñat. Obrador put a center back, Yeremay connected with a shot blocked by Sipcic and the ‘9’ just had enough to push the ball into the net. Dépor was comfortable and 0-4 seemed a matter of time. Mella had a one-on-one fight all the time in the world, but he forgave in front of an inspired Cuñat.
Jandro burns all his ships, taking Escriche and Pocho Román and Cartagena returns to the game in the first act of the two: center from Escriche, shot off the post by Pocho Román and an own goal from Barcia when he tried to clear his right foot. Shortly after 1-3, Ortuño almost made it 2-3 with a high header and Ríos Reina sent a direct free kick.
Dépor had to roll up its sleeves after wasting the opportunity to make a statement. Gilsanz brought on Petxarroman for Mella to create a double lateral on the right wing and Dépor managed to stop the home team’s push. In fact, Cristian Herrera, who came on for Barbero, and Pablo Vázquez had chances to end the match before the final minutes.
With Cartagena broken and the game turned into a street runner, Dépor was finally able to sentence. Cristian Herrera took advantage of a rebound from Cuñat, after a poor pass from Yeremay, to make it 1-4, and the Canarian winger closed his hand in his sixth goal of the season with accurate definition after a ball on his back. A victory to restore the sensations and highlight the name of Óscar Gilsanz in the long list of candidates to occupy the bench at Deportivo until the end of the season.
