Malaysia’s Badminton Stars to Miss SEA Games, Backing Local Talent
In a surprising move, Malaysia’s world No. 2 men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik are prepared to miss the SEA Games in Thailand to focus on the World Tour Finals. This decision, however, does not dampen their confidence in the men’s doubles depth in Malaysian badminton.
Aaron Chia, half of the world No. 2 pair, expressed his trust in the country’s next generation, stating, “I’ll be ready, but I’m handing that mission to players like Arif-Roy King or Haikal-Hon Jian, as I have already played in the SEA Games. This will be a good opportunity and stepping stone for them.”
The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) aims to send their strongest squad to secure gold, with several capable combinations ready to step up. Apart from Aaron-Wooi Yik, world No. 22 Wan Arif Wan Junaidi-Yap Roy King and world No. 43 Choong Hon Jian-Mohd Haikal Nazri are among the top contenders.
Last year’s SEA Games in Phnom Penh was a disappointment for Malaysia, with the team returning without a badminton gold and a surprise loss to the Philippines in the women’s team quarter-finals. BAM is determined to field a stronger team in Thailand to redeem their performance.
Looking Ahead to the World Tour Finals
The World Tour Finals, taking place from Dec 17-21, is another significant event for Malaysian badminton. Aaron-Chia Wooi Yik, as well as Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, are currently in the best position to qualify for the tournament. Their participation will provide valuable international exposure for the players and the country.
