Malaysian Badminton Star Arif Falls Ill Ahead of World Championships
In a worrying development for Malaysian badminton fans, men’s doubles player Wan Arif Wan Junaidi has fallen ill just days before the prestigious World Championships in Paris.
Arif’s Condition Raises Concerns Ahead of Debut
“Arif was down with fever and flu on Monday and could not train,” revealed Malaysian men’s doubles coach Herry Iman Pierngadi. “He has returned to training today but has still not fully recovered yet.”
I am a bit worried as the world meet is quite close. I will keep monitoring his physical condition. Hopefully, he can return to his normal self quickly.
Arif, alongside partner Yap Roy King, is scheduled to represent Malaysia in their debut at the World Championships starting next Monday. The pair is currently ranked No. 22 in the world and recently won their maiden World Tour title at the Macau Open.

Malaysia will also be represented by world No. 2 Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, world No. 3 Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, and Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun (No. 7) in the men’s doubles category.
What This Means for Malaysia’s Badminton Hopes
Arif’s illness throws a spanner in the works for Malaysia’s badminton aspirations at the World Championships. However, coach Herry remains optimistic about the team’s prospects.
“We have other strong pairs representing Malaysia. Aaron and Wooi Yik are world No. 2, while Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin are world No. 3. They will definitely give their best in Paris,” Herry added.
