Macclesfield’s Historic FA Cup Triumph over Crystal Palace
The third round of the FA Cup saw one of its biggest shocks in history as Macclesfield Town, ranked 117 places below their Premier League opponents, defeated holders Crystal Palace 2-1 at the Moss Rose Stadium.
Cup Magic for the Silkmen
Paul Dawson’s first-half header and Isaac Buckley-Ricketts’ strike after the break sent the home fans into ecstasy, cementing Macclesfield’s place in FA Cup folklore.
“For me, I think we won the FA Cup yesterday. It was just amazing for Macclesfield. I know the lads were partying until three, four o’clock in the morning. I mean the scenes for the town and the community yesterday was just one of those experiences that I’m never going to forget.”– Rob Smethurst, Macclesfield Town Chairman
Macclesfield Town chairman Rob Smethurst couldn’t contain his joy, admitting he was one of the first onto the pitch to celebrate with the players after the final whistle. Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Smethurst recounted the euphoric scenes:
“I legged it! I thought this is going to happen and I thought you know what, I’m going on! I thought I need to hug my players here, I probably was first on and caused havoc.”

The victory over Crystal Palace caps off a remarkable run for Macclesfield Town, who were relegated from the EFL League Two last season. Despite their lower league status, the Silkmen showed that on their day, they can compete with the best.
