Luis Aparicio Traded to Baltimore Orioles: A Path to World Series Glory
From Disappointment to Determination
In a move that surprised the baseball world, the Chicago White Sox traded star shortstop Luis Aparicio to the Baltimore Orioles on January 14, 1963. Aparicio, a seven-time record setter with the White Sox, expressed his disappointment “…about being traded to the Baltimore Orioles.” However, he also saw the potential of his new team.

Aparicio’s Impact on the Orioles
The Orioles’ faith in Aparicio was rewarded instantly. In his debut season, he led the American League in steals with 40 and scored 73 runs, earning a 23rd-place finish in the AL MVP voting.
World Series Triumph
With Aparicio’s stellar performance and the maturation of the Orioles’ young pitching staff, Baltimore acquired another future Hall of Famer – Frank Robinson – before the 1966 season. The resulting chemistry powered the Orioles to their first American League pennant in 35 years.
Aparicio led the AL in plate appearances and at-bats that year, batting .276 with 97 runs scored and 25 steals. He added four more hits in the World Series as Baltimore swept the Los Angeles Dodgers, fulfilling Aparicio’s prophesy of a title for the Orioles.
