Mexican Runner Lourdes Ponce Juarez Makes History at Deaflympics with Gold Medal
Mexico’s Lourdes Ponce Juarez has made history by becoming the first athlete to win a gold medal for her country at the Tokyo 2025 Deaflympic Games.
Golden Run in Women’s 10,000m Dash
Ponce Juarez dared to conquer the 10,000m women’s dash and achieved it with impressive results. She crossed the finish line with a time of 36:17.07, securing the first place in the race by setting a new national record.
“I feel incredibly happy and confident that there are still more medals to come for my country,” Ponce Juarez said in a post-race interview.
“Behind me, I have all the support of my family, coaches, teammates, and sponsors. My family, especially my daughter, is my greatest motivation,” she added.
Second Medal for Mexico
The Mexican delegation’s success continued with Lucia Amador Anaya’s outstanding performance, finishing fourth in the same event with a time of 38:05.12.
Previously, Maria Isabel Huitron Angeles, the flag bearer of the Mexican delegation, had already won a silver medal in judo in the -48kg category. Notably, Huitron is a triple medalist in the Deaflympic Games, having won two gold medals in the 2017 Summer Deaflympics held in Sava, and the 2022 Winter Deaflympics in Caxias do Sul.
About the 2025 Deaflympics
- The 2025 Deaflympics, held in Tokyo, Japan, gather approximately 3,000 athletes from 80 countries.
- Competitions include swimming, athletics, taekwondo, judo, golf, Greco-Roman wrestling, men’s indoor volleyball, and soccer.
- The events started on November 15, with competitions continuing until November 26, 2025.
