Lossiemouth Set to Challenge in Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham Festival

Published: March 9, 2026 | 247sports.news

Champion Hurdle Contender

Lossiemouth, trained by Willie Mullins, is confirmed to run in the Unibet Champion Hurdle on Tuesday, the opening day of the Cheltenham Festival. This marks a change in direction for the seven-year-old mare, who has previously excelled in the Close Brothers Mares’ Hurdle, winning it with ease in the last two seasons.

The decision to enter Lossiemouth into the Champion Hurdle came after discussions between Mullins and owner Rich Ricci. Mullins stated, Rich and I have been in dialogue on her target and after we spoke after racing at Gowran it has been decided that Lossiemouth will run in the Champion Hurdle.

Competitive Field

Lossiemouth will face a strong field of nine contenders, including last year’s winner Golden Ace and The New Lion. She is currently the joint-favourite at 9-4 alongside The New Lion.

Other horses competing include Brighterdaysahead, Workahead, Poniros, Anzadam, Alexei, and Tutti Quanti.

Tactical Approach

Mullins indicated that Lossiemouth will wear cheekpieces during the race. With the declaration timing she was always going to travel over to England when she has and we’re happy to let her take her chance on Tuesday where she’ll wear cheekpieces.

Previous Success

Lossiemouth has proven to be a formidable competitor at the Cheltenham Festival, having won the Mares’ Hurdle in both 2025 and the previous year.
