Loh Kean Yew Eyes Taipei Open Title After Sizzling Semi-Final Win

Dominant Loh Needs One More Win to Secure 10th Crown

TAIPEI — World No. 11 Loh Kean Yew is poised to capture his 10th career title after a sensational 21-18, 21-9 victory over home favorite Wang Tzu-wei in the men’s singles semi-finals of the US$240,000 Taipei Open on May 10. The 27-year-old Singaporean will face world No. 7 Chou Tien-chen in the final at the Taipei Arena on May 11, with Chou leading their head-to-head record 4-3.

Comeback Queen: Loh’s Stunning Resurgence

Trailing 1-7 early on, Loh staged a remarkable comeback to triumph over Wang, who had beaten him in their last three encounters. After switching tactics midway, Loh found his form and sealed the first game 21-18 with an exceptional rally andinet shots.

“I had trouble controlling the drift which was not to my favor, so I did my best to come up with solutions,” Loh quoted.

The Singaporean dominated the second game 21-9, showcasing a variety of shots and unpredictable gameplay. Wang, playing his first tournament after a March injury, admitted he struggled to match Loh’s increased pace.

Road to Recovery: Loh’s Resurgence

Loh’s win marks a strong return to form after reaching the 2024 Paris Olympics quarter-finals. In 2025, he made finals in the German Open and All England Open, and finished joint-third at the Badminton Asia Championships. Loh’s training stint in China with Zhao Junpeng, a 2022 world championships bronze medallist, has evidently paid off.

Final Showdown: Loh vs. Chou

Chou, a four-time Taipei Open champion, eased past India’s Ayush Shetty 21-18, 21-17 in the other semi-final. Loh and Chou have had close matches, with Chou winning their latest meeting in the 2024 Thailand Masters final.
