Between curiosity and the desire to test their skills, dozens of sports fans came this morning to the facilities of the Aragonese Tennis Federation to practice ‘pickleball’. It is a new sport, which is taking root in many countries and which – it could be said – today has made its debut on the banks of the Ebro.
Fans, technicians and players have been able to enjoy a shovel sport that It combines elements of tennis, paddle tennis, badminton and ping pong. It is played with two or four players using solid wood or high-tech composite pickleball paddles to hit a perforated plastic ball. Perhaps it is these balls with holes that have caught the most attention of the uninitiated, who have also been able to see how the net that divides the court is somewhat lower than that of tennis.
Already on Saturday, in the same facilities, a pickleball demonstration was held for Aragonese coaches and clubs, which was taught by Carlos Casañola. This morning we took action with an open day for all the fans who have been able to play a few games and see how the rules of the sport are learned quickly.
Those responsible for the meeting explained that the small dimensions of the court allow it to be played easily both outdoors and indoors, and that pickleball is taking root among young people, like other sports such as ‘ultimate frisbee’, of which there are already several clubs in Aragón and that many kids practice in the sports facilities on the San Francisco campus.
“Pickleball adapts to the level of each player and is very entertaining, since during the game there are long and fast rallies in which the level of the players clearly marks the intensity and rhythm of the game,” explain the organizers. of this introductory day.
In Spain the new sport is regulated by the Pickleball Committee of the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET), responsible for managing licenses, the official competition and the national ranking.
