In a display of proud authenticity, Leon emerged victorious with a 2-1 win over Juarez in a match corresponding to Day 17 of the Apertura 2023 in the Mexican League.
Under the guidance of Larcamón, Leon knew that a victory was crucial for their qualification hopes. From the start of the game, they launched an all-out attack and their efforts were rewarded after just 10 minutes with a goal from Vinas. However, after a VAR review, it was determined that the ball was out of play before the assist was provided, and the goal was disallowed.
Football proved to be cruel for the home team in the Bajío region. In the 18th minute, Juarez launched a counterattack that Spanish player Aitor Garcia skillfully finished, leaving Leon’s goalkeeper Cota helpless and creating a tense atmosphere for the emerald team.
But Leon did not give up. In the 38th minute, Sanchez’s shot was deflected by Talavera in the heart of the area, saving Juarez from conceding. Seizing the momentum, Federico Vinas scored a second goal just before halftime, delighting the fans.
Juarez Struggles in the Second Half
In the second half, Panzas Verdes struggled to maintain the high tempo they had displayed in the first half. They prioritized their defensive work, leaving Juarez with no chance to react.
Juarez’s hopes further diminished when Sebastian Saucedo was sent off in the 69th minute, reducing the visitors to ten players. Taking advantage of the numerical advantage, Leon’s Alfredo Talavera received a red card, resulting in a balanced period with both teams having ten players.
After the final whistle, Leon secured 23 points, placing them in eighth position and earning a spot in the Play-In stage. In a few weeks, they will face Atletico de San Luis at Alfonso Lastras Stadium. The winner of this match will then face Monterrey in the Quarterfinals, while the loser will have a second opportunity to qualify for the League against the winner of the Santos vs. Mazatlan match.
