October 15, 2024 (changed at 09:34) – PARIS

After the T03 city car and the large C10 SUV, the Leapmotor, the company, which has entered into a joint venture with Stellantis, has chosen the Paris exhibition to show the third model that will be launched in Europe. This is the Leapmotor B10, an SUV approximately 450 cm long which, in the intentions of the Chinese brand and Stellantis (which holds 20% of the shares), represents a fundamental step in the international expansion of the brand. Unlike the other cars, which were created for the Chinese market and brought to Europe, the B10 is in fact the first of the so-called B-series models from the Chinese company, designed specifically for global markets and which we will see, in large numbers, already next year. At the moment there are no technical details on the engines that will be mounted under the hood of the B10, but it is known that it will be built on the Leap 3.5 architecture, dedicated only to electric vehicles.

CLASSIC STYLE

It’s easy for the new B10 to take up the powertrain of the larger C10 SUV, which is equipped with a rear-mounted 218 HP engine and a 69 kWh. The stylistic approach, without any excess, evolves that of the larger C10 and C16 (the latter exhibited in Paris as a European preview), compared to which the B10 offers even thinner and more tapered optical groups. The interior has a customizable cockpit (10.25 inches, plus infotainment is 15″) while the advanced Adas are Level 2. Previews on the Chinese front say prices in the order of 15,000 euros (at the yuan-euro exchange rate) on the domestic market which, if confirmed, could lead the SUV to place itself in the 30,000 euro range in Europe. The company wants to accelerate its global expansion, which started at the end of September with the start of sales by more than 200 dealers in 13 countries in Europe. The plan involves increasing the number of stores to 500 by the end of 2025.

***IL NOTIZIARIO SETTIMANALE DI GEA - IMPRESE E MADE IN ITALY***

Turin, 27 September (GEA) – GEA begins broadcasting its weekly newsletter on business and Made in Italy.

STELLANTIS, UNIONS ON GENERAL STRIKE ON 10/18: WE ARE FACING A FAILURE

Car production in Italy is at an all-time low, layoffs at record levels, Stellantis’ “disengagement” is “total”. The unions of the entire national auto sector folded their arms for 8 hours on October 18, calling at the same time a large demonstration in Piazza del Popolo, in Rome. A historic strike, which hasn’t happened for over forty years, in the Italy of the former Fiat. The social partners are asking for intervention from the European Union, the government and businesses, starting with Stellantis, given the “failed choices of Rome, Brussels and multinationals”, denounces the leader of Fiom, Michele De Palma. They would like an extraordinary package of resources, a European fund, to support the transition of the sector through investments in research, development, design, social safety nets, training, reduction of working hours, batteries and charging infrastructure. Public investments with private participation, on one condition: that they are granted to companies that guarantee employment and the future of the factories. In Italy, they are once again asking for an official summons of Carlos Tavares to Palazzo Chigi, with the involvement of the prime minister, Giorgia Meloni. A table that is “no longer postponable and indispensable”, we read in a unitary document, to determine the prospects of the automotive sector in the country, within a general framework agreement that can give “positive responses not only to the workers of the Stellantis factories , but also to all those who work in component companies, who today experience a condition of great precariousness.”

THE FIRST ELECTRIC MODELS FROM THE STELLANTIS-LEAPMOTOR JOINT ARRIVE ON THE EUROPEAN MARKET (SEE INFOGRAPHIC)

“A leap forward†. It is indeed a leap forward that Stellantis has made, which presented, a few steps from the Malpensa 1 terminal, the C10 and T03 models of the Chinese Leapmotor, officially marking the debut of the Leapmotor International joint venture in Europe, or rather of the partnership strategy between the Franco-Italian group (51%) and the Asian one (49%), which has the aim of accelerating and expanding the sales of electric vehicles at competitive prices throughout the world. In practice, the Stellantis-Leapmotor global competition based on the combination of economy and technology starts from today. Production will start in the last quarter of this year, obviously based on orders, however by the end of 2024, Stellantis and Leapmotor still plan to open 350 points of sale across Europe, with the aim of reaching 500 by 2026 Furthermore, over the next three years, Leapmotor is committed to introducing at least one new model per year, thus consolidating its presence in the European market. “The ambitious goal, launched by Carlos Tavares, is to sell 500 thousand vehicles in 2030”, explained Tianshu Xin, CEO of Leapmotor International.

SPACE, TAR REJECTS APPEAL ON FLYEYE. URSO: GOVERNMENT CORRECTNESS RECOGNIZED

“I express satisfaction with the TAR’s decision which unlocks a strategic project for European space policy, recognizing the full correctness of the government’s actions. Forward on the path of development, Italy is in the field, a major player also in space”. Thus the Minister of Business and Made in Italy with responsibility for space and aerospace policies, Adolfo Urso, regarding the decision of the Sicilian TAR which rejected the appeal of some environmental associations that opposed the creation of the “FlyEye” observatory on Mount Mufara, in the Madonie, managed by ESA, the European space agency. “I have already communicated to ESA director Aschbacher the good news that will allow Sicily to have such a significant work, the frontier of new technology for space observation” added Minister Urso. FlyEye will in fact be the first telescope of a global network designed by ESA’s Space Security Program to monitor near-Earth objects and for the observation of deep space. Some of the most significant Italian scientists had expressed themselves in favor of the creation of the Observatory in a public manifesto which recalled how the work, with a reduced impact and free of light pollution, will be able to guarantee the protection of the landscape and nature, preventing the construction of works that are much more invasive for the environment, representing an effective strategy for the protection of the Madonie park.

COMPANIES, ANTITRUST INVESTIGATES SHEIN: POSSIBLE MISLEADING ADVERTISING LINKED TO SUSTAINABILITY

The Competition and Market Authority has started an investigation against “Infinite Styles Services CO. Limited based in Dublin, which manages the Italian Shein website, for the possible deceptiveness of some environmental statements contained in the ‘#SHEINTHEKNOW’, ‘evoluSHEIN’ and ‘Social Responsibility’ sections of the Shein.com website”. According to the Authority, given the growing sensitivity of consumers to the impact of their consumption choices on the environment, “the company would try to convey an image of productive and commercial sustainability of its clothing items through generic, vague, confusing and/or misleading environmental assertions regarding the ‘circularity’ and quality of products and their responsible consumption. Some information on ‘evoluSHEIN’, the clothing collection declared ‘sustainable’ by the company, could also be made. mislead consumers regarding the quantity of ‘green’ fibers used, also failing to inform them that the clothing items are no longer recyclable”.

EU, URSO ANTICIPATES THE ITALIAN PLAN FOR INDUSTRIAL POLICY: WHAT IT FORESEES

The Minister of Business and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso, participated in the Competitiveness Council of the European Union, in Brussels. In his speech, the minister presented the guidelines of the Italian proposal for a new European industrial policy, in line with the indications of the Draghi report, which will be formulated in a ‘non-paper’ with the other countries that share the contents of the Italian proposal. In particular, for the automotive sector, Urso supported the introduction of a ‘European Automotive Act’, highlighting the need for the European Commission to bring forward the presentation of the reports on the sector required by the Regulation on emissions from 2026 to the first months of 2025. CO2 for light vehicles, consequently activating the review clause in article 15, in order to review the methods that will lead to the cessation of internal combustion engines in 2035. Italy considers this deadline achievable only if three fundamental conditions are met : establish a support fund for the entire supply chain and for consumers who purchase electric cars produced in Europe; adopt an approach that favors technological neutrality, recognizing an important role for biofuels, e-fuels and hydrogen; define a strategy to guarantee European autonomy in battery production, using critical raw materials extracted and processed on the continent. The Italian plan also includes other strategic sectors for European competitiveness, such as steel and chemicals. As regards the steel industry, the proposal underlines how the objectives set by the Cbam Regulation, which will come into force in 2026, must not compromise the competitiveness of European companies, an issue also raised by other producing countries during the Council. In the dossier, it is considered necessary to ensure that decarbonisation for highly energy-intensive industries, particularly exposed to international trade, is sustainable from a production point of view.
