Korea Taps Active KBL Coaches for Asia Cup quals Amid Full-Time Coach Search

Temporary System in Place for National Team

In a surprising turn of events, the Korea Basketball Association (KBA) has decided to operate under a temporary coaching system for the national team. This move comes as the search for a full-time coach continues, with the KBA struggling to find a suitable candidate.

The KBA confirmed this decision at the ‘8th Adult Men’s Performance Improvement Committee’ meeting on the 10th, stating that they would use a temporary coaching system for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup Asia Qualifiers, set to take place in November.

Acting Coaches Announced

  • Seoul SK coach Jeon Hee-cheol will serve as acting coach for the home game against China on November 28,
  • While Changwon LG coach Cho Sang-hyun will lead the team for the away game on December 1.

KBA’s Struggles in Finding a Full-Time Coach

Korea’s sixth-place finish in the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Asia Cup last August left them unable to find a suitable full-time coach through their open recruitment process. Interviews were conducted with applicants Shin Ki-seong and Guna Dan, but no final decision has been made.

Jeon Hee-cheol’s Apprehension

“I didn’t think I had the capabilities… To coach the best players and participate in the competition.”

Temporary System Likely to be Short-Lived

The KBA is planning a deliberation of the entire board of directors on the 28th to make the final appointment of official coaches. Interviews with multiple foreign coaches are underway, and domestic leaders will be informed of the re-opening schedule at a later date.
