Anunoby to Miss Knicks’ Game Against Rockets Due to Ankle Injury
New York Knicks forward Og Anunoby will sit out Monday’s game against the Houston Rockets. Anunoby suffered a right ankle sprain during Saturday’s loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Anunoby was originally listed as questionable for the game against the Rockets but was ruled out later on Sunday.
Initial X-rays on Anunoby’s ankle taken after the game were negative. New York head coach Tom Thibodeau said the initial prognosis is positive but Anunoby will need to be monitored closely.
“We just want to make sure he’s fully healthy before he steps back on the court,” Thibodeau said.
Anunoby, who signed a five-year, $212 million contract with the Knicks this offseason, has proven to be a vital piece of their early success. In 49 starts this season, he is averaging 16.4 points per game. The Knicks have a winning record with Anunoby on the floor (52-19) and a losing record without him (30-29).
The Knicks will travel to Toronto to take on the Raptors on Tuesday night after Monday’s matchup against Houston.
Anunoby’s absence will be a blow to a New York team looking to secure a high playoff seed in the Eastern Conference.
Anunoby Speaks Out
After practice on Monday, Anunoby spoke briefly to reporters.
“It’s frustrating, especially after making such a big commitment to this team. I want to be out there with my teammates every night.” Anunoby said, before adding, “The good news is it’s not a serious injury. I’ll be back out on the court as soon as I’m able.”
