Kiyase Bamboos Navigate Changes in Youth Baseball

The Impact of the Bat Ban on Youth Baseball Strategies

Starting this year, elementary school softball and baseball teams are prohibited from using general (adult) composite bats made of urethane materials and other high-rebound materials.
This regulation change will see many teams adjusting their strategies. One notable team affected by this change is the Kiyase Bamboos from Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, which competed in the Kura Sushi Tournament Pop Athlete Cup 2024 held at Jingu Stadium. The tournament, which saw approximately 1,500 teams from across the country, presented a significant challenge for the Bamboos to adapt to the new rules.
Until recently, the team had relied on a powerful hitting strategy, amassing 134 home runs two seasons ago, of which 50% were solo hits. They also clocked 14 tournament victories last year and had their first top-level performance at the Kura Sushi Tournament since 2008, setting an overpowering record with their thunderous hits.
As the ban on using high-rebound bases was implemented, the team is altering its offensive playbook dramatically.
Coach Nakagawa Yoshio, who has 32 years of experience coaching Kiyase Bamboos, emphasised the need for consistent batting practice. Because of the weekend-only practice schedule, he instructed his players to swing their bats 100-200 times at home and come ready to hit well on weekends. He noted how noticeable the improvement was for those practicing consistently.

The shift in playing style due to the new regulations has led Coach Nakagawa to instruct his players to focus on hitting hard grounded balls when a runner is on third base. He emphasizes the importance of executing hits for optimal scores, including executing inside-the-park strategies,
which often result in higher infield bounce ball emmends even without a classic home run strike.
The new pitching strategy decided by coach Nakagawa requires thorough offence placements and the emphasis on improving pitching strength for future competitions.
Consequently, the team aims to nurture versatile batters and pitchers for both junior and senior high school levels. Players are consistently refining their defensive and pitching skills rather than sticking to aggressive batting.

Historical Team and Future Vision

The Kiyase Bamboos, a historic team founded in 1974, marks a significant milestone in the baseball arena this year. Currently, the fourth-graders are gearing up to compete against an equal class selection base to boost their competitive edge.
Coach Nakagawa’s decision has been made to balance the selection of skill-specific divisions. This approach allows the team not only to gauge their improvements better but also motivates all aspirants to strive for excellence amid a demanding practice environment.
